STORY & PHOTOS BY TYRUS MCBRIDE LEBANON, Tenn. - Shelbyville Central High School with dominating backcourt play stopped nationally ranked Wilson Central with the help of 6-foot-2 Jasmine Hassell, 62-42. The senior backcourt of 5-8 Sha’Para Johnson and Ceny Phelps scorched Wilson Central for a combined 49 points in the convincing win over the No. 21 ranked team in the Full Court Press Top 25. Shelbyville improved to 16-5 while Wilson falls to 20-2. A smothering box-and-one defense along with double team defenses proved to be too much for Wilson and five-star rated Hassell to overcome. Hassell was held to only two points in the first half and a game total of ten points, making just three field goals. “They played harder and smarter than we did tonight” Bud Brandon the head coach of Wilson Central said. “They just came ready to play. We did not box out and dug ourselves too deep of a hole”. Wilson Central was out rebounded 40-27 for the night.

Wilson was held to a dismal 4 of 27 from the three-point line. “The three(point shot) wasn’t our friend tonight,” Brandon said. “Sometimes we live by it and sometimes we die from it. We hope to learn from this loss and respond in a positive way”.

Wilson got off to a very slow start and trailed 16-8 at the end of the first period. Shelbyville compounded Wilson’s frustration by answering two-three point shots from Chelsea Burroughs and Lauren Wasson with a 10-0 run. The first half was capped off with a clean open court steal and crossover pull-up by Johnson of who scored 23 points in the game. Shelbyville led 35-18 at the halftime buzzer.
Wilson came out in better form the third period scoring 12 points in the period but Phelps and 6-4 senior Alex Jarrell stepped up to the challenge for Shelbyville. Jarrell’s seven-foot wingspan clogged the passing lanes keeping Hassell from getting enough touches.
Johnson snatched one of her game high eight rebounds just before the end of the third period, pushed the ball up the court and in perfect form launched a rainbow jump shot from the half court center circle at the buzzer to expand their lead 51-30. The lead expanded as large as 24 points in the final period for Shelbyville.
This win vindicated a one-point loss to Wilson back in mid-December for Shelbyville and they have a chance to redeem their other two in-state losses to Columbia Central and Mount Juliet in their five remaining games. Shelbyville Central High School, after going 2 and 2 in the Black Division of the TOC in Phoenix and knocking off a top 25 team is making a strong case for consideration of national ranking.
After the loss Hassell commented that she is continuing to focus on her team winning the state championship and after the season she will begin to concentrate on her college choices.
Phelps led the scoring barrage with 26 for Shelbyville and is being courted by Baylor, Western Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee State among others. The senior will likely sign in the late signing period this spring. Some of the colleges in attendance during this game included: Clemson, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
