Posted Thu, 09/21/2006 - 20:00 A look at Virginia's Lynetta Kizer, one of the top players in the 2008 class, tops our weekly compilation of prospect news from around the country.

Somehow you get the feeling that you wouldn't want to wrestle over porkchops at the Kizer family dinner table. First, there's the patriarch, Keith, who is 6 feet 2 and played hoops in the Army. His son, Dominique, is 6-1 and trying to walk on at Virginia Commonwealth. His oldest daughter, Lynetta, won the battle of the genes, stands 6-3 and is ranked as the nation's No. 7 prospect in the 2008 class by HoopGurlz.com.
Oh yes, Lynetta has a younger sister, Quinana, who will be her sophomore teammate at Potomac High School in Dumfries, Va. Poor Quiana. She's only 5-10.
"She got my mother's height," Lynetta Kizer explained, in reference to Yvonne, the likely odd family member out in any dinner-table wrestling.
Size isn't everything, but it sure helps - a lot - in basketball. The fact that Lynetta Kizer has it, and knows how to use it, will make her a white-hot commodity on the recruiting trail this year.

Kizer knows this and has been proactive, even though she's been able to receive written letters from colleges for only a few weeks. She's already visited Temple - back in the 8th grade. Since then, she's made unofficial visits to Duke, Maryland, North Carolina State (twice) and Virginia. Unlike most, even a few elite-level seniors, Kizer even already has a list of leaders - Maryland, N.C. State and Virginia.
"I'm looking at the coaches and the players - how I get along with them," Kizer said.
Not surprisingly then, Kizer will have former Boo Williams Summer League teammates at each of her leading programs. Monica Wright, a 2006 All-American selection by HoopGurlz, is at Virginia, Kim Rodgers has verbaled to Maryland and Tia Bell recently committed to N.C. State.
There's a lot of time left, so the sneaking suspicion here is that Kizer's list is destined to grow. In the middle of perhaps the nation's best collection of elite perimeter players, she excelled at using her strength to clean the glass at both ends and suck in defenses with her power-oriented moves on the low blocks. She is unusual among girls because she appears to actually like to take and dish out contact, a fact she confirms and attributes to playing against her brother and his friends while growing up.
Kizer also does not consider herself a finished product - by any stretch of the imagination. She already has begun tuning up for the high-school season, working on facing the basket and improving her mid-range shooting. She also is honing her defensive skills, "believe it or not," as she put it.
"I like playing on the outside, but I know I need to play on the inside," Kizer said. "I'd just rather play a complete game. I know I'm faster than most posts on the outside and bigger than most inside."
Just don't get her confused with the other highest rated post prospect in 2008 - Ayana Dunning of Columbus, Ohio. Dunning goes by Ya-Ya, an obvious derivative of her first name. Kizer goes by Yah Yah, a not-so-obvious monicker tagged on her by her younger sister. The two centers worked out in close quarters during the Nike Girl's Skills Academy in Eugene, Ore., last June and, "it got a little confusing," according to Kizer.
To the girls, that is. To any connoisseur of post play, there was no confusing the talent out on the floor.

One of the more sought-after uncommitted prospects of 2007, Lenita Sanford is down to a final four. The 6-1 shot-blocker extraordinaire out of Lynnwood, Calif., favors USC, then Rutgers, with Cal and Arizona also in the picture. She is expected to make a decision during the middle of next month, after making an official visit to Arizona. The fact that the Trojans have an edge with Sanford likely is some nerve-calming news for USC coach Mark Trahk. After assembling the No. 1 signing class of 2006, according to HoopGurlz and Scout.com, Trahk and staff have finished second with several elite prospects this year and their favorable position with HoopGurlz All-American Stefanie Gilbreath was rocked a bit by developments earlier this week (San Jose guard Danielle Robinson's commitment to Oklahoma and the possible domino effect on Gilbreath and, possibly, Vicki Baugh of Sacramento, another HoopGurlz All-American). Sanford can be a defensive anchor from the power-forward position and is athletic enough to develop more at the offensive end. ... Courtney Newton of Flowery Branch, Ga., scored the 1,000th point of her career, then missed all but four games of her junior season after suffering an ACL tear in her right knee. The 5-10 guard returned during the summer to contribute to a highly successful Georgia Metros team. The payoff was a commitment to South Carolina. Newton also considered Tennessee-Chattanooga, Vanderbilt, Virginia Commonwealth and Wake Forest. ... Strong and nifty point guard Andrea McGuirt of Duluth, Ga., a Marist School teammate of Drey Mingo's, has been offered by Indiana. ... Cosima Higham, a tough, 6-foot forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., has committed to Bucknell. Higham also considered Fairfield, Lafayette, Providence, Quinnipiac and Rhode Island.
