The country has its girl's basketball hotbeds, and coaches and fans from all over will argue relentlessly over which region is tops for talent. Is it the Beltway? Or Southern California? Texas? What about New York? In any of these debates, the Peach State, Georgia, needs to be included.

Georgia produced Maya Moore from Collins Hill High School in Suwannee, Ga., the No. 1 ranked player in the 2007 class, according to HoopGurlz.com. On top of that the No. 12 and No. 16 ranked players - St. Pius X High School's Kelley Cain and the Marist School's Drey Mingo - also called Georgia home. The Top 20 trio signed with Connecticut, Tennessee and Maryland, respectively, and even going back another year to the 2006 class the No. 15 player, Ashley Houts from Dade County High School in Trenton, Ga., went on to Georgia and was the SEC Freshman of the Year.

So we're taking a late summer look at the current prospects from Georgia and where they are in the recruiting process.

Mo Bennett

We'll start with the players that have already verbally committed. Alicia Manning the 2008 classes No. 15 ranked player committed to Tennessee. Mo Bennettthe No. 29 ranked player in the class is committed to Georgia Tech and will be joined by her Peach State Elite club team teammate Nisha Adams, a 6-4 post ranked No. 91 in the 2008 class with incredible length and athleticism from Liberty County High School. Metra Walthour, a 5-6 guard also form Liberty County has also verbally committed to Georgia Tech. Top that off with Taylor Dalrymple, who won a national title this year with Collins Hill and has committed to South Carolina, and two Clemson commits in 6-2 forward Lindsay Welker of Tift County High School and Lindsay Mason, a 6-4 post who plays with Manning at Etowah High School in Woodstock, Ga. Mason's club teammate, Amanda Harshaw of Atlanta, Ga., verbally committed to Western Carolina.

The No. 55 player in the 2008 class, Taylor Turnbow from Clarkston, Ga., is down to Duke, LSU, Rutgers, Texas and Vanderbilt.Canesha Edwardsof Newnan, Ga. ,is looking at Appalachian State, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, South Carolina and Western Carolina for next year. Courtney Hurt from Loganville, Ga., a 6-0 forward, lists Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and VCU. Morgan Jennings from Atlanta, Ga. is down to four with Auburn, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and VCU.

Brittni Johnson, a 5-6 combo guard from Athens, Ga., is down to South Carolina, South Florida and Tennessee-Chattanooga.Parrisha Simmons a 5-11 wing from Macon, Ga., is down to a final three and has scheduled visits with Auburn, Clemson and Louisville.Charenee Stephens from Decatur, Ga. is down to Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Rutgers and South Carolina. Jylisa Williams, from Snellville, Ga., has a list of Auburn, Jacksonville State, LSU, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth. Tonia Williams a 6-1 forwards from Warner Robbins, Ga., has visits scheduled with Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina and Virginia Tech with Memphis still in the mix as well.

Metros Guard Challenged

Shaniqua Pauldo, a 6-4 interior player from Suwannee, Ga., is open, but has Clemson and Virginia Tech on her list. Porsha Porter, a 5-5 guard from Suwannee, Ga. is open but looking at East Carolina and Virginia Tech as well as others.Krista Tate, a 6-0 wing from Atlanta, Ga., is still open and considering Tulane and UNC-Wilmington among others. Latia Williams, a 5-9 guard from Riverdale, Ga., is open but East Carolina and Georgia State are in the mix among others.

But the talent in Georgia doesn't stop in 2008. We get to look forward the development of the next year's crop, which may be led by Shacara Rucker, a smooth and explosive scorer. Morgan Toles is one of the top underclass point guards you will find. Jasmine Blain is a 6-2 2009 prospect from Kennesaw, Ga., and she is looking at Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Miami, North Carolina, NC State and South Carolina. Blain has visited Georgia Tech for an unofficial and has upcoming visits at Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Michelle Ivey, a six-footer from Stone Mountain, Ga., has a preliminary list of Auburn, Duke, Richmond, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Another 2009 with an early list is Marissa Rimbert of Suwannee, Ga., who likes Columbia, Georgia, Georgia State, Hampton, Missouri, Penn State and South Carolina early. Jillian Winston of Kennesaw, Ga., has a long list of schools of interest that includes American, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Howard, Jacksonville, Maryland, New York University, South Carolina, UCLA and USC round out her list. Another youngster, Courtney Bradford, a 6-1 2010 prospect from Alpharetta, Ga., likes Columbia, Georgia, Georgia State, Hampton, Missouri and Penn State.

So there's a lot of action in the one of the nation's hot beds for basketball talent and, after the players get a chance to visit their top schools officially and sort though their options, this fall should be very interesting.
