The tragic shooting of Terrell Rogers at halftime of the Archbishop Mitty-Sacred Heart Cathedral game this past Saturday sent shock waves through the northern California basketball community. Rogers was the father of Sacred Heart’s star guard, Tierra Rogers, who is among the best players on the west coast. He was pronounced dead on at the scene.
The funeral is scheduled for this Tuesday. Rogers is staying with friends of the family outside the city for a few days and is looking forward to returning to school and the hardwood.
Saturday’s scheduled game between Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Francis has been cancelled as the players and the community copes with Rogers' death. The game has been rescheduled for January 26. They will resume games next week. The Rogers funeral is scheduled for Tuesday and the game scheduled that day will be played Wednesday.
The boys’ basketball team at Sacred Heart chose to play their game Tuesday night, just three days after the shooting, for Rogers. They ultimately lost 57-51 to Riordan but played the game to help pick up the community.
Back in Action
Pensacola High School, the No. 1 ranked 4A team in the Florida Sports Writers Association poll, remain unbeaten at 19-0 despite missing Bianca Lutley, their star guard and the No. 20 ranked player in the 2009 class according to HoopGurlz.com. Lutley missed three weeks after suffering a partial posterior cruciate ligament tear in December.

At the time of the injury Lutley heard the infamous “pop” that signifies a probable complete ligament tear. Lutley later found out the tear was relatively minor and surgery was not needed. In her first three games back she seems to be back to her old self averaging 26.3 points per game. Lutley is the fastest player ever in school history to the 1,000 point benchmark. She broke 1,000 points in her 48th point game beating Michelle Snow's record.
Elena Delle Donne, Ursuline Academy’s star wing, has missed the last ten games including her team’s games at the Nike Tournament of Champions because of a bout with mononucleosis. Delle Donne, a Connecticut signee, returned to the court this week.
Rankings Buzz
The Florida Sports Writers Association released their state rankings Wednesday and this coming week the top ranked schools from the state's two biggest classifications are scheduled to play. Vanderbilt-bound Jordan Coleman leads the 6A classification's top ranked team, Lake Mary (21-1), against Connecticut-bound Tiffany Hayes and Winter Haven (20-1), the top ranked 5A school. The two teams met once before back in November with Lake Mary taking a 55-50 home victory. The rematch will take the Rams of Lake Mary, whose only loss is to Greenville High School (Tenn.), to Winter Haven next weekend.
In the 6A classification Norland follows Lake Mary at 15-3. The two schools will not play until the state playoffs. Rounding out the top ten are Ely (16-2), Flanagan (16-3), Sarasota Riverview (15-3), Sickles (17-2), Hialeah (13-3), Lakes (16-3), Lourdes (17-2) and at No. 10 is Edgewater. The Orlando-area Edgewater team is led by Wake Forest-bound point guard, Brooke Thomas.
The 5A Classification is thus far all about Winter Haven who has all the first place votes. The second ranked Nova Titans have a perfect record in Florida but lost to Maryland powerhouse Riverdale Baptist and Bolingbrook from Illinois. If Nova can remain unscathed in state and get wins over Winter Haven, ranked No. 2 in the Southland Region by ESPN.com, and beat the Southland's No. 8 ranked Collier, they will have a convincing argument to crack the nation's Top 25.
Collier (22-2) is led by Texas A&M commit, Kelsey Assarian. The 6-1 senior forward is averaging more than 18 points per game and has Collier in a tie with Leesburg (21-1) for the No. 3 spot. Completing the 5A rankings are Lee (19-2), Lake Howell (13-3), Tampa Bay Tech, Boca Ciega (19-2), Dillard and Fort Walton Beach (20-3) is in a tie with Plant (17-2) for the No. 10 spot.
Pensacola (19-0) tops the 4A classification while junior point guard, Erica Wheeler, has Miramar Parkway Academy (20-1) atop the 3A rankings. Father Lopez (15-3) sits at No. 1 in the 2A classification and Sarasota Christian (10-3) claims the top spot in Class A.
Notes
After missing the beginning of the basketball season for Cy-Fair while finishing their commitment to the volleyball team, the Ogwumike sisters have the Bobcats rolling. Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike are combining for 31.9 points and 16.9 rebounds per game and the team has won 23 straight games. Nneka Ogumike has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Stanford next year. Chiney Ogwumike is just a sophomore. ... Pueblo High School (Ariz.) forward Angela Lopez scored 40 points in her team's opening game of the season, a 49-52 loss to Sunnyside. Friday night the senior topped her season high with 41 points and a season high 20 rebounds. In Pueblo's last two games she has scored 80 points and grabbed 34 rebounds boosting her season averages to 27.2 points and 11.1 rebounds.
