Playing on a regional all-star club team isn't for everyone, but it worked out well for Chelsea Hopkins.
One of this summer’s biggest risers, Hopkinsswitched from a Las Vegas-based local team to the West Coast Elite, joining Ashley Gayle and Monique Oliver, two others from Las Vegas already on the team. Consequently, Hopkins' final six schools do not include any schools recruiting her hard a year ago this time.
The rise to national notoriety came from the move to an all-star team where she didn’t get to do what she does best in high school, which is scoring. Hopkins led the state of Nevada in scoring her junior year but she adjusted her role to play with the plethora of “big’s” and other prominent wing players on West Coast Elite.

“I’m playing with Kelsey Bone, Ashley Gayle and Monique Oliver who attract a lot of attention from the coaches,” Hopkins said.
This theory is one that many kids who are recruited to these regional super teams must dissect individually. It doesn’t work for everyone and especially for a player like Hopkins who is used to having the show run through her start to finish in high school. At Mojave she will pull up for three, push it coast to coast or break defenders down in the half court.
“I thought I was a really good fit for West Coast (Elite),” Hopkins said. “It’s been a whole different world.”
Not every high school star can reel their games in and defer to others. For some the super team theory backfires as they are perceived as playing poorly rather than fitting into the team. However, Hopkins' stock continued to rise with every viewing tournament. During a big game at Nike Nationals the opposition was getting beat inside almost every time down and they tried to bait Hopkins into pulling the trigger on long jumpers by backing way off her. She still ran the offense, got her posts the ball and her team went on to beat a team they had dropped close games to their last two meetings.
Hopkins, who has all the quickness you could ask for in a point guard, completed her first official visit to USC on August 31. Her second stop was Texas on September 8, where she joined Gayle, who would commit on the visit, as well as the 2009 class’s No. 1 player, Kelsey Bone. Bone also was a teammate of Hopkins on West Coast Elite.
Ranked No. 61 in the 2008 class by HoopGurlz.com, Hopkins is traveling to Temple University next for a visit with head coach Dawn Staley and her program September 13. Hopkins was drawn to Temple by Staley and her reputation as one of the best point guards in the women’s game in her day and a pioneer of the women’s game. “If I go there I can learn a lot,” Hopkins said. “She can take may game to another level.”
Hopkins will take her last two official visits to Duke on September 21, and California on October 6, with an unofficial visit to UCLA sandwiched in-between on September 29.

Basketball is not the only thing Hopkins has going for her. She holds down a 4.6 GPA, is a member of the black student union as well as the student government while being ranked No. 2 in her class. “I’m an exceptional student,” Hopkins said. “I didn’t want basketball to be the only thing that defined me.”
Hopkins is looking for a degree in business via marketing or communications. She’s may be interested public relations but hasn’t put much thought into her career yet. Academics are among her highest priorities in deciding where to play. She has researched her schools to see where they stand in the Top 50 rankings of business schools. She is drawn in to the Marshall Business School at USC into which very few freshmen get accepted, but her grades and accomplishments make her a strong candidate for which she is excited.
On her visit to USC she noted the closeness of the team among other things.
“I loved USC. When I was on campus it was really comfortable,” said Hopkins, who had already been on campus for their elite camp earlier this summer with Oliver. “It was a good experience because. I already knew the players. They’re like a family. They all know it’s about the team. They want to win. They all support each other. I know that if I choose that school I’d have plenty of support.”
Just back from her trip to Austin to visit head coach Gail Goestenkors and the University of Texas, she sees Texas as a good fit as well.
“It was a new experience,” Hopkins said. “I really like the coaching staff, especially what Gail trying to do over there a new tradition. They seem like they are pretty close as well. And academically they’re good.” She had a good feeling while she was there but she didn’t feel the same urge Gayle did while there to verbally commit.
“To me it’s about the little things,” Hopkins said of the factors impacting her decision. “I need more than to go to a school and have that good feeling. I need to be able to compare it.” Hopkins likes the uptempo style of play which is a huge factor in her decision.
Hopkins also said playing with friends, while fun, is ancillary. “I need to make the best decision for me.”
The hyper-quick, ankle breaker from North Sin-City has all her cards on the table now.
