Bright Lights of Success

So this is what it feels like to go undefeated in the ACC and capture the ACC title ... I guess it really hasn’t kicked in yet, the fact that we have won four straight titles. That is something very special and I am a part of it as a freshman. The word for this week would be: incredible.

The ACC tournament actually went by really fast. We arrived in Greensboro Wednesday night and had a shootaround in the coliseum the next morning. After the shootaround, the first game of the tournament was right after us. So we changed and made our way to the game room. It was pretty cool, I must admit. Ping-pong table, air hockey table, X-Box games, etc. The best part? It was all free!

After running the table in air hockey, I made my way back to the court to watch the first half of the first game. When I sat down, I looked up to see a couple thousand elementary school students screaming at the top of their lungs for absolutely no reason. You remember those days when you were that young. If you went on a field trip like that and you could just scream and scream, chances are you would. While we were watching the game all these kids started to run down to us and ask for autographs. I don’t mind signing autographs at all, but apparently this little security guy took matters into his own hands. To every kid who tried to ask for an autograph, he would say, “They do not want to sign autographs right now so go back to your seat!” I felt bad for them because we really don’t mind and he was just so hateful to them.

Anyway, we played Thursday against Clemson. This was definitely a physical game. I can say this because I came out of this game on a stretcher with whip lash and a mild concussion. I am a tough kid, though, so I made my visit to the hospital just for precaution and then went back to the hotel after my scan came back negative. I was given some prescription pain killers because my neck was stiff; the pills really do their job and knock you out at the same time. That was the second time I had ever been in the back of an ambulance in my life, but the good thing is I keep bouncing back.

We won that game and we were set to play Virginia on Friday. I was very sensitive to lights so we had to find some way to fix the problem because the coliseum lights were extra bright. I did not play because my neck was so stiff and I was walking around squinting. How did I fix the light problem? Well, how else do you keep light out of your eyes while still being able to see? My answer was a very stylish pair of sunglasses, courtesy my athletic trainer. So, I walked out on the court with shoes tied and my sunglasses on. As you would imagine, I got a lot of stares and a lot of comments on my shades.

Another victory and we were awaiting the winner of Duke and Maryland. I watched that game as it followed right after ours and Duke ended up on top. So, we were set up for yet another UNC-Duke matchup. Now, when you walk out on the floor for warmups and you are about to face your rival, it is a totally different feeling than you usually have. We have all had our share of rivalry games and I am sure you know the feeling. Extra pumped and you can just feel the adrenaline running through your veins. It is just awesome.

I didn’t get to wear my cool shades for the ACC championship game against Duke. Lucky for me, I could actually tolerate the lights, but I still did not play. We kept a good tempo throughout the game and I never had any doubts about winning because we have two incredible post players. Seniors Erlana Larkins and Latoya Pringle are simply amazing. They come out with rebounds and make shots that just seem impossible to do. But with those two, impossible is nothing. We won and Erlana was named the most valuable player of the tournament, which was expected because she played flawless through out. The final horn sounded as confetti and balloons fell to the ground. I looked up to see Toya holding up four fingers as it signified her four years of ACC domination. I was very proud of our team and even more amazed that this group of seniors only knows one thing -- and that is to win the ACC title.

This week is spring break for all UNC students. We had weights on Monday and shooting groups and practice on Tuesday. Now, the real fun begins! I am going back home because this weekend, I will become Aunt Bee. My sister is having her first baby and I couldn’t be more excited. I have been giving my dad a hard time by saying, “Has it kicked in yet that you will be a grandfather?” He just smiles and I know he is just as excited as I am. We are leaving Chapel Hill Wednesday and I have to be back by Sunday evening for a 7:00 p.m. practice.

I wanted to give my heartfelt condolences to Eve Carson’s family. She was such a positive influence on society and again my thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Take life day-by-day and enjoy every second. I will be so nervous and excited at the same time before I see my niece. I am sure she will be a beautiful baby girl and I am almost certain she will be very spoiled!

Stay cool and keep ballin’ ya’ll!
