The Big Ten Conference is off to a good start in recruiting the class of 2009. Tuesday evening Samantha Arnold, a 6-foot-4 wing from Lake Park High School (Roselle, Ill.), verbally committed to the Michigan Wolverines. Arnold’s commitment makes five notable prospects from the class to verbally commit to Big Ten schools already.
Arnold is a versatile wing player who has great mobility for her size. If anything her perimeter game is ahead of her back to the basket game offensively. As a sophomore she averaged nearly 19 points per game for Lake Park while spending her summer with the Chicago Hoops Express.
Michigan offered Arnold both the basketball and academic setting. “I’ve been on three visits there,” Arnold said. “Every single time I’ve went there I’ve loved it. I like the coaches, all of them a lot. I like how the team there is like a family; it’s like a home away from home type (of) thing.”
Michigan is lead by first year head coach Kevin Borseth. Michigan is Borseth’s fourth collegiate coaching position. He started out coaching community college for five seasons before spending eleven seasons at Michigan Tech and nine at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
“I think every time, whether it was (the coaching staff) watching one of my games or talking to them I’ve always felt comfortable around them,” Arnold said. “I felt like I could see myself playing for them.”
Arnold was selected to the all-state fourth team by the Illinois Basketball Coaches association as a sophomore as well as honorable mention for the Chicago Tribune All-American selection among other local press awards. Arnold will continue her club ball with the Chicago Hoops Express after the high school season.
