Cal Recruiting Heats Up

Posted Sat, 03/29/2008 - 13:28 Cal lands another top 30 big from the 2009 class.

Cal, on the heels of a heart-breaking NCAA tournament loss have found some healing power in recruiting as they received a verbal commitment from another top 2009 front-court player. Brenna Heater, the No. 29 player in the class, according to HoopGurlz.com, verbally committed to the Bears.
“She committed (Saturday) afternoon in a phone conversation with (head coach) Joanne Boyle,” Brian Heater, Brenna’s father, said.
Heater wanted to stay on the west coast and despite both mom and dad being Oregon alums she chose Cal. She connected well with the coaches, the direction of the program and the weather as well.

Brenna Heater extends for two.
Heater joins an already impressive recruiting haul for the Bears with DeNesha Stallworth’s commitment earlier this year. This assures Cal that life after Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker will be all right as the Bears definitely needed a few additions in the paint to replace the two All-Pac 10 players who will be seniors next year.
Heater was M.I.A. from the summer circuit last year while recovering from an injury to her right ankle. This year she will play for the Cal Storm, the same club team fellow Oregonian Michelle Jenkins (USC signee) played for last summer.
Heater will travel with the storm to the Boo Williams Invitational in April but will not play. She is taking the next month or two to rehab her ankle and regain top conditioning before hitting the hardwood full speed, something she didn’t do after her sophomore year when injured the ankle originally. She jumped right into club ball and never gave the ankle time to rest. According to her father, the doctors think rest and rehabilitation will keep her off the surgeon’s table.
Heather made unofficial visits to Cal and Stanford last weekend and previously made unofficial visits to Oregon and Utah. Her former club coach, Anthony Levrets, is an assistant at Utah.
Heater wanted to get out of Oregon but still be close enough that her family could see her play. Berkeley is a five-to-six-hour drive from the family’s home in Ashland, Oregon and Oregon State are even closer and driving to Seattle to watch her play is also feasible.
With Heather and Stallworth the Bears have two versatile frontcourt players that are yet to reach their full potential. Heater expects to make considerable strides this summer where playing with the Storm at some of the nation’s biggest tournaments she’ll be tested against some of the top players in the country.
