If everything plays out the way most anticipate, one of the biggest games of the high-school season will take place March 8, at Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., between Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, Calif.) and St. Mary’s (Stockton, Calif.). Because both are unbeaten and Sacred Heart is ranked No. 1 by Full Court Press, and St. Mary's No. 5, the winner could be crowned the mythical national champion by ending the season ranked No. 1.
“Just to be in that arena,” Tom Gonsalves, the head coach of St. Mary’s, said, “if both teams were undefeated, it would be a great atmosphere."
Most of the season St. Mary’s has been overlooked with most of the national attention going to Polytechnic High School (Long Beach, Calif.) and Sacred Heart Cathedral. Sacred Heart upset Long Beach early in the season at the Nike Northwest Invitational in Beaverton, Ore., and those two teams have been the topic of debates all over the country.
“I have all the respect in the world for those two teams (Poly and Sacred Heart), they’re great programs,” Gonsalves said. “(Sacred Heart) took it to us last time in San Francisco. We started four freshman; these guys are sophomores now. Physical maturity would make it a different game. That’s a great team that Sacred Heart has. My hat’s off to them. They’re just a tremendous team. With (Sacred Heart) being so good I can see how we’d get overlooked. We’re just on the outside looking in.”

Afure Jemerigbe elevates for two.
St. Mary’s may not play in a league as strong as Sacred Heart, but it has played some strong teams from Califorina in Brea Olinda, Clovis West, Moreau Catholic and Piedmont to name a few and beat Reed (Reno, Nev.). The lack of buzz is largely because the team was not able to travel to Phoenix for the Nike Tournament as it had done with top teams in years past. St. Mary's final exam schedule precluded the team's participation.
The natural comparion of this year’s squad is with St. Mary's last state championship run with Jacki Gemelos in charge. Gemelos, the No. 2 ranked prospect in the 2006 class and a sophomore at USC, was one of the most prolific scorers ever. This year’s Rams may not have Gemelos, but they are a deeper team and have two budding stars in Chelsea Gray and Afure Jemerigbe.
“Chelsea just matured physically over the last year,” Gonsalves said of his top-flight point guard. “She’s not even the same player. She’s on the Jackie Gemelos trail right now, I really believe that, if she continues to grow, I mean they’re different players but she passes the ball just like Jackie and she’s got that kind of ability.”
Gray is the niece of Alexis Gray-Lawson, the star point guard for the Cal Bears and the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 2006.
“Chelsea and Jacki are similar in a couple of ways; they are both big point guards who can score, but most importantly they lift the players around them,” said Mark Anger, the director of East Bay Xplosion, where both played their club ball. “In addition they both share a feel for the game which you rarely find in a player. They both have the court vision, to deliver the ball in openings which other players don’t even see. I used to tell girls who were just starting to play with Jacki keep your hands up, you never know when you are going to get the ball; it is the same way with Chelsea. They are big game players who want the ball in their hands when the game is on the line.”
“Afure reminds me more of another California player of the year I coached a few years back,” Gonsalves said of his dynamic scoring guard, “Dominque Banks, but at 5-foot-11. Dominique was like 5-6.”
Jemerigbe is an explosive player who can get to the basket at will as well as elevate over the post defenders to finish.
“Afure is one of those players that plays better in big games,” Gonsalves said. “She just steps up. She’s got the ability, she’s so athletic, (and) she can play at a very high level.”
“Jacki was one of those I couldn’t tell her not to shoot because she was just too good,” Gonsalves added. “She could score on anybody. But these girls here, they just find their teammates a little bit more. It’s a more well-rounded squad. It’s the most athletic team we’ve ever had.”
Together with Gray they form a tremendous backcourt and they also have a terrific supporting cast with senior Courtney French, a UC-Davis commit, as the constant presence the youngsters can look up to.
The overriding theme for this team is chemistry. With a team loaded with primarily sophomores there is the potential for disarray but this is special group.
“They genuinely care about each other,” Gonsalves said. “I’ve been coaching a long time and you don’t get that on all your teams, or very many at all. They’re all low maintenance. I don’t deal with any problems.”

Chelsea Gray lines up from three-point
range.
He also points to French’s “motherly” nature and her ability to keep the kids within the boundaries of this happy-go-lucky group. But the fun is not the only key to its success. Anyone who has followed St. Mary’s for more than a season will know it is known for shooting the three. Renee Roberts who played with Gemelos and won three state titles in her four years at St. Mary’s set the California record for career three-pointers made with 447 including 148 her junior season.
This year’s team may not have one elite shooter, but it has three-point threats up and down the roster. The team regularly uses a 100-shot three-point drill and this last week it had six players make more than 60 with one player hitting 83 and another making 80. Despite the shooting prowess, the Rams are attempting fewer three-point shots than in years past because of the dynamic duo of Gray and Jemerigbe getting to the basket so well.
“I’ve won state championships and not had this much fun,” Gonsalves said.
Critics still may discount this year’s youthful team because they didn’t schedule like Poly or Notre Dame Academy.
“We’ve played some good teams,” Gonsalves said. “Brea Olinda I thought was a tremendous team. … I told my team before the game ‘You’re playing a team that’s better than you but on a given night you can outplay them.’ And I tell you what, we played phenomenal.”
St. Mary’s beat Brea Olinda 52-44 to win the West Coast Jamboree championship.
Even their coach didn’t see a Top 10 team this early. He thought they were a year away from being a contender. Time will tell with the Sacred Heart game on the horizon and the winner making a convincing case to be the No. 1 team in the country.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep vs. St. Mary's of Stockton
Unless they have changed divisions, I believe SHCP vs. St. Mary's of Stockton, will happen in the CCS Tournament well b4 Sacramento as it did last year. It's unfortunate that one of these teams will have to knock the other off but that seems to be the way things will end up happening. I'm not saying you're wrong Chris but we've played St. Mary's twice in the last two years. Once on their court and once on ours. Both times it was during the CCS Tournament... Is that what you mean?
My name is Dwayne Cook.... Play the game ladies!
