LaSondra Barrett
MASON, Ohio - First things first, our Nike Midwest Showdown tournament Most Valuable Player goes to LaSondra Barrett who has not only star player qualities but also played as consistent as anyone in the tournament too. She battled the twin towers of West Coast Elite in the semifinals and led her team to a near-perfect record, dropping only one pool play game to the Dayton Lady Hoopstars.
The following is our "Best of" list. Because we are focusing on the 2008 class, the majority of the games we viewed were in the Elite division and we tried our best to view every team and player.

Yvonne Anderson of the Family picked up the slack for her team without her usual backcourt mate, Skylar Diggins. She has really stepped up her game on both ends of the floor and took over parts of games, took and made tough shots. Against Dayton she hit back to back pull up jumpers to ice the game over great defense.
Kelsey Bone of West Coast Elite-Black led her team to the semis where they lost a heartbreaking four-OT thriller. She showed her dominating presence around the basket, her underrated passing skills and improved shooting range as well as being the vocal leader on the court. She added a nice jump hook to her power dropstep and showed a face up game from the high post as well.
Cierra Bravard
Cierra Bravard of SMAC Showtime showed how powerful of an interior player she is. She sets strong screens and does the dirty work in the paint. She likes to mix it up on both ends play very physical and adds another element in her abilty to step out and shoot from the perimeter as well.
Chasity Clayton of Team Unique played great on the perimeter and in some cases taking over the primary ball handling role for her team as well as scoring. She combines raw explosive athleticism with balance and a smoothness that makes it look easy. She scores in the paint off the dribble and can knock down jumpers as well.
Amber Gray of Cincinnati's Finest is fantastic all weekend. She played dominant inside, dominant outside, she scored even when she didn't make field goals like the 17 she scored while going three for eleven from the field in their win over West Coast and when the Flight took away the interior she went Kobe on them hitting jab and then shoot and step back threes that had the Flight Coach speechless after the game.
Jasmine Hassell of the Tennessee Flight Silver is often overlooked with the big-name players already committed to big programs but with her effort this weekend she helped the Flight through some tough games. She rebounded the ball with the best of them and her leaping ability surprised a lot of would be shooters when their shots were swatted from the sky. Without her the Flight may not have been champions.
Destini Hughes of DFW Elite was fantastic all weekend and was a candidate for MVP. She controlled the tempo of games, scored, distributed, defended. In all she looked like the best point guard in the gym and maybe in the country.
Courtney Lumpkin
Glory Johnson of Tennessee Pride was on a mission this weekend. She did everything. She scored inside, outside, rebounded, defended, created for her teammates and won a lot against teams most thought would beat them. Truly a terrific weekend of basketball from Johnson.
Courtney Lumpkin of Cincinnati's Finest was another key player in the Finest's run to the finals. Her best game was perhaps the win over West Coast Elite, scoring 13 points, which by itself may not be All-Tourney worty but her buckets were clutch and really sparked her team when the opposition keyed on Gray. She was fantastic.
Tia McBride of All Ohio-Black had a great tournament playing in the front court along side one of the best posts in the country in Ayana Dunning, who is yet to get her legs back from mono. McBride showcased her athleticism cleaning up the glass, defending multiple positions, running the floor and blocking shots all over the gym.
Natalie Novosel of the champion Tennessee Flight Silver was very consistent on both ends. She showcased her trademark jab and go to get to the cup and defended very well. In the game against Dayton she led all scorers with 36 points, which was just two short of what the team needed in their only loss.
Monique Oliver of West Coast Elite is the second and lesser known of the twin towers, but her name will be out there this summer if she continues to play like she did this weekend. She defended well both inside and showed she can move her feet on the perimeter. Her drop step is as powerful as anyone's and she rebounded ferociously all tournament long.
Justine Raterman
Samantha Prahalis of NYC Exodus continued building her lore for being one of the most crafty ballhandlers of her time. Some say Pistol Pete but in more modern times I'll compare her to Jason Williams as she is not only crafty with her handle and passing, she also has the ability to create a shot anywhere on the floor against any defender and is not afraid to take any of those shots.
Justine Raterman of the Dayton Lady Hoopstars showed her versatility in leading her team in arguably the toughest pool in the tournament. She is a do everything forward. She scored in the interior, ran the floor and stepped out and knocked down three pointers consistently as well.
Alexa Roache of NYC Exodus goes a long way to show how far heart can take you. She is not the biggest forward around but plays with the bigger forwards. She is a rebounding animal and is a burst of energy in the open floor. She was incredibly effective for Exodus despite not getting the isolated touches that superstars get.
Monique Reed of the Legends is considered one of the top local recruits ever by Lousiville and she showed why here, leading a relatively new and unheralded club team into bracket play. She is a beast inside, either catching it on the blocks or off penetration, and can hit the jumper out to the arc.
Shacara Rucker of the Atlata Celtics proved she can create a shot against just about anyone. She was a bolt of lightening up and down the court, with and without the ball. She has a great one-bounce pull-up jumper that is hard to defend because of her first step.
Chay Shegog of the Fairfax Stars played with a much more physical presence than in years past. She still showed she has the best finesse game of any post in her class but she played with more power and explosion around the basket.
Sarah Watkins of the Tennessee Flight Navy was an offensive machine. She scored in so many ways. She scored on the block against bigger players she faced up and knocked down mid range jumpers. She was truly a handful and got the Flight out of pool play and into the big bracket.
Candace Wood of the champion Tennessee Flight Silver hit big shots late in the tournament including huge shots in the overtime bonanza against West Coast Elite. She can be an X-factor in any game just with her shooting ability. She also used her length to bother passes and showed she can play the passing lanes very well.
