The view for Boo
IRVINE, Calif. - Boo Williams Summer League took on some of the best the state of California had to offer, ran the table at the West Coast Elite Invitational and returned to Virginia with an enhanced national reputation.
The much-anticipated matchup of Boo Williams and West Coast Elite took place Sunday in the semifinals and the game was intense and hard fought from the tip to the final buzzer. It was by far the most intense game I saw this tournament with top-rated players going to war all over the court. Boo Williams jumped out to an early lead before West Coast Elite mounted a big run to take the lead with 13 minutes to play in the half on a transition pull-up three from Brianna Gilbreath who played her best game of the tournament in this game.

Ultimately the defensive pressure of Boo Williams led to more than 20 turnovers which was too much of a hole for West Coast to climb out of. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt led all scorers with 20 points, and saved her most impressive shots for the last few minutes of the game to suck the air out of any comebacks. She showed a consistent catch-and-shoot, three-point shot this weekend as well as the usual play you expect - hard-nosed defense and scoring by attacking the basket. She played most of the second half on an injured ankle which was evident when she landed after her jumper or for a rebound as she landed usually on one foot the rest of the game.
Boo Williams also had a tough matchup in their final pool play game against the East Bay Xplosion. The Xplosion got a terrific offensive performance from Loyola Maramount bound guard, Alex Cowling, who handled the ball pressure extremely well and got her sweet and smooth jumper off whenever she had space. The most impressive part of her performance is the cool and collected nature in which she played despite having several great defenders thrown at her.
These two games didn’t even include the championship game during which Boo was down early to the Cal Swish II, but again the BWSL defense was overwhelming despite not have Ruffin-Pratt for most of the game.
Boo Williams doesn’t have the signature scorers they’ve had the past few years but this team is one heck of a defensive team and they still have plenty of offensive fire power in Lynetta Kizer, Ruffin-Pratt, She’la White and Mia Nickson. White played very confident and strong all weekend and was the best outing I can remember from her. She showed her picture perfect jumper drops more often than not and she attacked the basket much more regularly than in the past.
Another solid player was Jazmine Jackson of Mission Rec who rebounded from a rough game Saturday morning to play with an offensive swagger and ability to get into the paint the rest of the way. She has a nice basketball frame with good length and is pretty strong. Her ball handling and elusiveness allows her to create a lot of offense for herself.
