IRVINE, Calif. - The opening day of the West Coast Elite Invitation kicked off with pool play in the 16-team elite bracket.

Boo Williams Summer League traveled the longest distance of any team, flying in from Virginia. They just may be on a collsion course with the host team, West Coast Elite – Black. To get there they’ll have to win their last pool play game Sunday morning against one of the toughest teams in California, the East Bay Xplosion. Both are 2-0 in pool play.

Boo Williams cruised to a big win in the afternoon, allowing the team to play their bench a lot more than usual. Players such as Sugar Rodgers, Sonya Johnson, Alyssa Bennett and Kay Vick could show why they are on one of the top club teams in the country. Most interesting for Boo was seeing Josette Campbell, who plays the two guard for Notre Dame Academy, get some run at the point; she made good decisions and handled the ball pressure from Cal Swish San Diego.

West Coast Elite had a one-half thriller against Mission Rec. West Coast Elite led by just one point at half behind the scoring of Robie Mayberry, Jazmine Jackson and the three-point bombs from Addie Schivo. That, along with strong efforts inside from Kamilah Jackson, kept the much smaller MRC squad in the game. West Coast Elite pulled away in the second half but the spark that got the team going was the biggest shock of the day. A team stacked with top-ranked post players and perimeter plays were saved by an 8th grader, if you can imagine that. Kaleena Lewis, a smooth wing with great touch on her jumper, did what she does best - shoot the rock. She came off the bench gunning and knocking down big threes. Following suit, backcourt teammate Kiyanna Stamps also fueled the fire by knocking down big shots. The perimeter shooting loosened up the defense and allowed Kelsey Bone and Monique Oliver to get back to dominating with their high -ow game.

The talent on the West Coast Elite – Black team may be indicative of a growing hot bed for talent in the west – Las Vegas. There are four kids from Vegas on the team making huge contributions - Oliver, Ashley Gayle, Chelsea Hopkins and Lindy LaRocque. Those four almost complete an imposing starting five by themselves. Hopkins is a lightening quick point guard with a knack for scoring, LaRocque is a big time shooter and both Gayle and Oliver get it done in the paint on both ends of the floor. Another Vegas player, Hayley Henderson, also is in the program on the Red team and s a legitimate Division I talent. Vegas seems to be a market for female player for colleges to take a gamble on.

Another team that looked strong in the elite bracket that could make a run for the championship is TSIN-Gold led by Jackie Marshall, one of the top sophomores in California. In addition, Mya Oliver, Lauren Oosdyke and Melissa Zoring all played very well together and individually.
